SAN JOSE — Chris Wondolowski will have a chance to tie or break the all-time MLS scoring record next year if he fails to get it done in the season finale next Sunday in Seattle.

Two sources close to the Danville native said the Quakes picked up his option year earlier this season ensuring Wondolowski, 35, the opportunity to make history with his hometown team.

San Jose has yet to announce the decision to re-sign Wondolowski, who earns $800,000 annually. But sources said team officials told their captain he would return in 2019.

Wondolowski lives in the East Bay where he grew up and wants to stay with the team he followed as a kid.
